Oh how I do love me a beautifully broken man. And Maxwell Black is most definitely that. Such a tormented soul, but such a hauntingly beautiful being all at the same time. This man has had such a crap hand dealt to him in life. He was definitely ready for a ray of sunshine to enter his dismal life.
Enter Elle. This feisty little creature that captured his attention from the first glance, even if he knew that he didn't deserve her- he couldn't help but want her more than his next breath. I think his feeling of self-loathing is one of the things that made me feel so much for him. The fact that he didn't feel as though he was entitled to Elle, he felt like he had to earn her trust and love.
As terrible as Maxwell's past had been, Elle's just about matched it. While hers had not been quite as horrific and violent as his, it had been no less horrid and bleak. The things she had endured, due to the actions of her own father, were things that no daughter should have to face. No child should be forced to give up so much to help a parent who refuses to help themselves.
One of my favorite things about the entire book was the library aspect. How sexy was it that Maxwell is the town's librarian, who only wants to share his love of books with the public?? OMG!! Heart and panty melting. I do love a man with brains and brawn. And Maxwell Black most certainly had both- in spades. The things he did to protect Elle, their future, and the happiness that they both deserved- were things that any woman would be lucky to have her man do.
I cannot wait to get more stories from the mind of this fiercely talented author, and can only hope that I don't have to wait too long!! 5 stars!!
