He’s only a friend.
Those words had haunted him from the moment Jessie James had heard them muttered from the one girl, above all others, that he thought had his back.
Sixteen years later, he still feels those words like a brand on his soul.
Lucky for him he has a son to take care of, a full-time job that demands every single second of the day, and not a single moment to spare for the likes of a woman that won’t stand up for him when he needs her the most.
He’s only a friend.
The words had slipped out of Ellen’s mouth, and before she could recall them or better yet, explain, Jesse is gone from her life for good, taking her heart with him.
She tries to find her way out of the pit of despair, but not one single person, no matter how much she tries, can fill the void that he left in his wake.
Time heals all wounds. Or at least that is how the saying goes.
It’s a crock of crap, though.
Sixteen years pass when Jessie and Ellen see each other again without the influence of the town and bad memories surrounding them, and it’s as if not a single day has passed.
Ellen knows the instant that her eyes see her old love that she’s still just as much in love with him today as she was all those years ago.
The problem is that Jesse wants nothing to do with her. Or at least that’s what he keeps telling himself.

MY REVIEW FOR THE BEARD MADE ME DO IT:
Okay, I have to say, like many others I was skeptical going in on how I was going to react to Ellen. Given that she had broken our sweet Seanshine's heart in the last book, I had some issues with her. But, I was trying to keep an open mind, and felt that maybe it was all because she, like Sean, had to do it to find her one TRUE love.
Let me just say now- I am SO glad I kept that open mind.
Ellen is awesome. I just fell right on in love with that woman. Just hook, line and sinker. I could absolutely understand every one of the reasons she had for what she did, and why she did it. As well, I fell just as hard for Jessie. Even if the reasons for them being apart for horrible, and should have, and could have, been prevented- I got it. They were made to be together. All of the crap in their past had to happen, in order for them to finally HAPPEN. You get me?
These two have definitely been through the wringer over the past several years- mostly at the hands of Jessie's craptastic ex, and the mother of his kid, Linc. And let me tell you, this woman is a piece of work. Just plain awful. The things she does, even after Jessie and Ellen reconnect and reconcile- they are horrid. It makes me glad to see her get what she deserves late in the book- that's all I have to say.
Other than that- everyone else is hilarious, a good dose of our favorite band of Rejects thrown in, with some more glimpses of what may be coming for Ghost, as well. There was truly nothing about this one that I can complain about- except that I will always ask for more when it comes to Lani Lynn- I'm greedy like that!!
