He’s only a friend.

Those words had haunted him from the moment Jessie James had heard them muttered from the one girl, above all others, that he thought had his back.

Sixteen years later, he still feels those words like a brand on his soul.

Lucky for him he has a son to take care of, a full-time job that demands every single second of the day, and not a single moment to spare for the likes of a woman that won’t stand up for him when he needs her the most.

He’s only a friend.

The words had slipped out of Ellen’s mouth, and before she could recall them or better yet, explain, Jesse is gone from her life for good, taking her heart with him.

She tries to find her way out of the pit of despair, but not one single person, no matter how much she tries, can fill the void that he left in his wake.

Time heals all wounds. Or at least that is how the saying goes.

It’s a crock of crap, though.

Sixteen years pass when Jessie and Ellen see each other again without the influence of the town and bad memories surrounding them, and it’s as if not a single day has passed.

Ellen knows the instant that her eyes see her old love that she’s still just as much in love with him today as she was all those years ago.

The problem is that Jesse wants nothing to do with her. Or at least that’s what he keeps telling himself.

MY REVIEW FOR THE BEARD MADE ME DO IT:

Okay, I have to say, like many others I was skeptical going in on how I was going to react to Ellen. Given that she had broken our sweet Seanshine's heart in the last book, I had some issues with her. But, I was trying to keep an open mind, and felt that maybe it was all because she, like Sean, had to do it to find her one TRUE love.
Let me just say now- I am SO glad I kept that open mind.
Ellen is awesome. I just fell right on in love with that woman. Just hook, line and sinker. I could absolutely understand every one of the reasons she had for what she did, and why she did it. As well, I fell just as hard for Jessie. Even if the reasons for them being apart for horrible, and should have, and could have, been prevented- I got it. They were made to be together. All of the crap in their past had to happen, in order for them to finally HAPPEN. You get me?
These two have definitely been through the wringer over the past several years- mostly at the hands of Jessie's craptastic ex, and the mother of his kid, Linc. And let me tell you, this woman is a piece of work. Just plain awful. The things she does, even after Jessie and Ellen reconnect and reconcile- they are horrid. It makes me glad to see her get what she deserves late in the book- that's all I have to say.
Other than that- everyone else is hilarious, a good dose of our favorite band of Rejects thrown in, with some more glimpses of what may be coming for Ghost, as well. There was truly nothing about this one that I can complain about- except that I will always ask for more when it comes to Lani Lynn- I'm greedy like that!!
5 big ole fat stars!!!

My childhood was stolen by a monster. I’ve forgotten what love feels like. What happiness feels like. What hope feels like. I am numb.

Him

He’s possibly as damaged as I am. Maybe even more. Scarred just as much on the inside as the outside. Just like me. He doesn’t speak. He doesn’t smile. New Release & Review!!! Alpha Male-- Jenika Snow!!!

What's there to say about a Jenika Snow book that hasn't been said before? Nothing, but wonderful, fantastic things- that's what! With every new Real Man book, the woman makes me fall deeper into the cocoon of love and warmth that her heroes and heroines provide, and give me the perfect escape from reality, as well the beautiful happy endings that I crave.
Lachlan and Layla fit right into the series perfectly. With the fiercely protective nature of Lachlan, regardless that it's his job to be that way, you can see the love almost emanating from him. The way that he tenderly cares for his charge is nothing short of heart stopping. He would gladly step in front of any danger imaginable- if that's what it took to keep Layla safe and happy.
However, Layla doesn't ask for such things, as the only thing she wants from life- is Lachlan. Given that her feelings are just as fierce for the man that watches her every move, it's no wonder that these two are soulmates. The love they share goes beyond the physical, to a bone deep level that some only wish they could find. It's breath taking. It's hot. Quite simply- it's everything.
Trust me, you don't want to skip this one, it's worth every penny and every minute of page time. 5 stars!!!

Layla

For the last two years Lachlan has been my personal bodyguard. Although I don’t feel in danger and don’t need someone constantly watching me, because it’s Lachlan, I can’t help but feel safe.
I love him.
He is big and strong, with training that makes him deadly. Anyone who is stupid enough to cross him learns that swiftly.
But I’m too afraid to tell him how much I want him. I’m too afraid to tell him that I crave him.

Lachlan

I was hired to be her bodyguard, to make sure she was safe because her father is a senator. But even if her father hadn’t hired me, I wouldn’t have been able to leave her alone.
I love her, want her as mine, and I need to show Layla that she was meant for me.
I need to show her that if anyone looks at her, speaks to her, or thinks they have a right to touch her, I’ll lay them out and not think twice.
She is my world, and no one but me will have her.
I’m done waiting. It’s time I make Layla mine.

Warning: Have a neck brace on hand because this story will give you whiplash. It’s short and to the point, but that’s how we like them. It’s not lacking in the heat department, has an over-the-top alpha hero, and a sweet virgin heroine. No worries, though; you get a safe read with a Happily Ever After and some baby making in the process.

Lachlan

I watched Layla. Always. But it wasn't just because that was my job. It was because I wanted her, fucking badly. I wanted her to be mine, to never know the touch of another man, to look into my eyes and know I’d take care of her.
“Lachlan, location check-in.” Rocco’s voice came through in my earpiece.
“South building of Pearson Hall. Layla should be heading back to the estate within the next ten minutes. I’ll check in once en route.”
“Copy that.”
I leaned against a tree and watched as Layla spoke to some little asshole that I knew was in her economics class. The possessive side of me wanted to come out and stake its claim right then and there. Hell, I didn’t want anyone looking at her, let alone speaking with her.
I clenched my jaw as I watched him reach out and brush a strand of her hair from her shoulder. I wanted to go over there and beat the little fucker to the ground, but I had self-control, was trained to only make a move if absolutely necessary.
Me going over there and being a caveman, throwing her over my shoulder and stalking away to make my claim, was a bad fucking idea.
But even that small touch the asshole gives her pissed me the fuck off.
She was my job, or at least that’s what I tried to tell myself to make it easier to be around her. But being her bodyguard for the last two years made that an impossible task.
Her father, Jonathan Lancaster, was a senator. Even before that, his connections and social standings had made the wealthy tycoon take extra precautions to protect his family, which resulted in him hiring bodyguards twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
I’d been Layla Lancaster’s—Jonathan’s daughter—personal bodyguard for the last two years, before her father took office. I’d already deemed her as mine, even if I hadn’t been a man and told her.
She’d been eighteen at the time I was assigned to her, freshly graduated from high school and starting her first year of college. And from the moment I saw her, she was all I wanted.
From the moment I saw her, I knew she would be mine.
And I’d made sure during that whole time that she was always my priority, my permanent station. The very thought of somebody else protecting her, didn't sit well with me. I wanted to be the one that looked after her.
She ended up walking away from the douche and heading to her car. Layla was stubborn, but I fucking loved that about her. She was independent, which drove her father insane. That included her refusing to have a driver, which was what Jonathan Lancaster wanted. Instead she drove herself wherever she felt like going.
She could be a force to be reckoned with, and it made me want her more.
But the one thing her father would not budge on was her having a bodyguard.
And I was always here, because fuck all to hell if anything happened to her on my watch.
